From Gap to Gain

I have recently begun a gratitude practice. In my life (and in my work) I often focus forward. I focus on where I want to go and what I want to achieve. It’s so easy to get stuck there in the wishing and hoping and striving. And while I do believe it’s valuable to create a vision and make goals to move forward, I strongly advocate for regular (even daily) assessment of where you are and how far you’ve come.
I recently started reading the book The Gap and the Gain by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy. The central idea is simple but transformative: most of us measure our progress against an ideal—the "gap" between where we are and where we wish we were. It’s a moving target, always shifting further away. Like the horizon. Impossible to reach.
But what if we flipped that? What if instead of measuring forward into the gap, we measured backward—from where we started to where we are now? That’s the "gain."
This shift from gap-thinking to gain-thinking is more than positive thinking. It’s a reframe that cultivates gratitude, fuels momentum, and gives us real clarity on the growth we’ve already achieved.
When I look at my own journey, especially moments I’ve felt stuck or behind, I now ask: “Where was I a year ago?” That backward glance immediately shows me the wins I’ve minimized or overlooked. And that builds confidence. It grounds me in reality, not just dreams.
So here’s your invitation: pause and measure your latest gain. Don’t skip past it. Maybe begin your own gratitude practice. You’re further along than you think—and that’s worth celebrating.
Let’s stay in the gain together.
Journal Prompts:
What progress have I made in the past 3 months? (List specific wins—big or small—that show how far you've come.)
Where was I one year ago, and how have I grown since then?
What strengths have I developed or discovered recently?
What challenge did I handle better this time than in the past?
What are three things I’ve achieved that my past self would be proud of?
When I’m in “gap mode,” what thoughts or comparisons tend to show up? How can I reframe them into “gain mode”?
What does progress feel like to me—not just look like?
Affirmations:
I measure my growth by how far I’ve come, not how far I have to go.
I am making progress, even when it feels slow.
Every step forward counts—and I honor each one.
I trust the process and celebrate the progress.
I release the pressure of perfection and recognize the power of progress.
TheWeekly Draft
What is it? I have talked to some of you about how I set up my week every Sunday evening. During that time I write/reflect on how my previous week progressed — the things that went well, the things I wish I had accomplished — and I plan for my next week. I set my priorities and goals, I reflect on habits, I timeblock my calendar, etc.
So I would like to invite you all in to my planning space.
I will open my personal zoom room every Sunday evening at 7pm for whoever wants to join me. We will co-work on setting up our weeks and have an accountability checkin for whoever needs it. HERE is the link to join (hit: it’s my personal zoom link)
ACTION NEEDED!
I'm moving over to my new website fully by mid-June. That means that I will need to shift all of your auto payments over to the new platform. I will be sending you all individual emails with the date you should do this and the link to follow.
Office Hours: No more office hours in May.
The Weekly Draft happens every Sunday evening at 7pm at this link. Come prepared to reflect on your week and plan the week ahead.
