May Goal Check-in

It's hard to believe it, but we are halfway through May on our way to June. Even thought it is quickly approaching, we haven't hit the mid-year point yet. How are those goals you set back at the beginning of the year going for you? Have you stumbled? Are you right on track and making progress? Have you forgotten about them? Did you make goals?


I wanted to spend this week on a goal refresher and revisit my theory on what makes goals actually achievable. Most of us, when we think of goals, think of outcome goals. These are things we want to achieve, gain, do, be, basically the outcome we want to see. Many people stop there. They set a goal to lose weight, run a 5K, hit sales numbers, relax more, meditate, journal, clean the house, etc.


Without a foundation and plan, those goals are simply wishes.


My approach to goals starts with the foundation of our identity and values "who do we need to be in order to achieve our goal?" Maybe you need grit, perseverence or diligence. Maybe you need creativity, presence or self-respect. These values should be incorporated into your daily life in the form of affirmations, mantras and notes to yourself. This is where the "do the thing" starts. It starts with your desire. It starts with who you are and want to be.


After values comes habits, which lead to routines and systems. What are you doing every single day that will lead you to goals success? How are you arranging your environment to give you the cues you need to remember to do the thing? Do you track your progress? Do you reward yourself for following through with your habit and doing the work towards your goal? This is where the true magic lies!


A successful life is built on habits.


Journal Prompts

  • Where am I right now?

    • What goals did I set at the beginning of the year?

    • Which ones am I actively working toward? Which have faded?

  • What values were those goals rooted in?

    • Why did I want to accomplish them?

    • What kind of person did I hope to become by achieving them?

  • Who do I need to be to follow through?

    • What qualities or values (e.g., grit, creativity, presence) do I need to embody more consistently?

    • Where in my daily life do I already show up this way?

  • What habits support my identity?

    • What small, repeatable actions can I take each day to embody my values and reach my goals?

    • Which habits have been helping? Which ones have been holding me back?

  • How can I make success easier?

    • What systems or routines would make it easier to follow through?

    • What can I do to make my environment more supportive of my goals?

  • What’s one goal I’d love to recommit to?

    • Why this one?

    • What’s one action I can take this week to move it forward?


Affirmations

  • I am becoming the person I need to be to achieve my goals.

  • My daily actions align with my deepest values.

  • Progress is built through small, consistent choices.

  • I trust my ability to adapt, recommit, and move forward.

  • Each habit I choose brings me closer to the life I want.

  • I don’t need perfection—I just need momentum.

  • I design my environment to support my success.

  • It’s okay to begin again. Every day is a fresh draft.




TheWeekly Draft

What is it? I have talked to some of you about how I set up my week every Sunday evening. During that time I write/reflect on how my previous week progressed — the things that went well, the things I wish I had accomplished — and I plan for my next week. I set my priorities and goals, I reflect on habits, I timeblock my calendar, etc.


So I would like to invite you all in to my planning space.
